The pictured Betta is a Crowntail variety. This iconic fish hails from Siam. Although there are several different specie the Splendens are the most popular. In their natural environment Bettas live in small streams and puddles. Each male holding his own territory. Due to poor oxygen content the fish is capable of air breathing. This same poor oxygen content is the reason for the now famous bubble nest.
While the fighting of Bettas is shunned in the U.S. it is widely accepted in the East. The fish nip and tear each others fins until one fish gives up. However, in a couple of weeks the fins of the fish grow back as long and beautiful as ever.
This fish is very pretty, but kinda mean and kinda EVIL!!!
Size: 2 1/2in.
Temperature: 70-90 degrees F (Breeds best at 80 degrees.)
Food Preferences: Any Betta food will do. But Mr.Evil over here likes to eat cute little brine shrimp too, meanie.
Temperament: Lets just say he likes to be alone.
While getting two Bettas to breed is not too difficult the upkeep on a 50-200 little jars can be overwhelming. I don't recommend this as a bonding experience for you and your daughter (or son) as the loss of life and up keep take their toll.
Although,Mr. Evil over here can be a pill, he actually is a great dad. He alone tends the nest and protects the young.
